Thunder Mesa is a semi-banked asphalt oval dedicated for Radio Controlled Car use. Thunder Mesa is owned and operated by Albuquerque’s Two Bit Racers Quarter Scale Radio Controlled Car Club and is sanctioned by QSAC. The track sits on 1/3 acre just west of Sandia Motorsports Park at the corner of Shelly Road and Speedway Blvd atop Albuquerque’s West Mesa and measures right at 300 ft in the “racing groove” with 75 foot straights. The track is well lit for night time use and features a lighted pit area with electric, computer scoring, plenty of parking (no hookups), 6’ tall driver’s stand and restroom facilities. A concession stand is in the works and will be available at most events. Originally built in 1999 as a clay oval featuring Quarter Scale Winged Sprint Cars, the track was paved in the spring of 2005 to accommodate other classes of quarter scale race cars.
The cars are Quarter Scale versions of popular types or cars racing here in the United States. Generally the classes of cars are Open Wheel Sprint Cars, Grand National Stockcars and Super Trucks. In stock cars, there is also Novice and Sportsman classes which makes racing fun for beginners up to seasoned veterans. Quarter scale is the largest of all radio controlled auto racing. At up to 4 feet long, 18 inches wide, & weighing up to 30lbs. The cars are capable of speeds up to 70 mph. The size alone sets them apart from all other scales of radio controlled race cars. Each class of cars uses the same size and make 23cc weed-eater type engine, with no internal modifications allowed. The cars have fully adjustable four wheel suspension with oil filled shocks. Each class of cars are regulated by numerous rules set forth by the sanctioning body (QSAC) to ensure a level playing field, putting car set-up and driving ability to the forefront.
Quarter Scale is one of the least expensive forms of competitive automobile racing in the country. For much less than $2000.00, you can get a race car that will be competitive with the top quarter scale racers anywhere in the country for years to come.
